The PendulumThroughout history, the pendulum has played a pivotal role in many sciences and everyday activities. Some of the earliest and most reliable clocks were regulated by the pendulum as are many clocks today. When you swing on your swing set, you are using a pendulum for fun. But the power of the pendulum goes much deeper, into the realm of the unknown and unexplainable!

For thousands of years, mystics have used pendulums much like a divining rod to find water and lost objects. But our favorite use of pendulums is even more mysterious...
foretelling the future.

Nothing elaborate is needed. Just a string and a weight. Of course, you can dress it up by using a thin gold chain and a crystal bob. (It will look really professional)

Now, just hold the string/chain lightly between your thumb and the first two fingers of one hand. Rest your elbow on a table and let the pendulum hang down with the bob about 2 inches above the surface. Now, let's explore the mystery and power of your pendulum!

Getting Ready...
Holding the pendulum as described, mentally tell the pendulum to move back and forth in a direction (front/back; left/right; circle clockwise; circle counterclockwise). Do NOT try to make it swing by moving your hand - keep your hand still, stay relaxed and concentrate on your instructions to the pendulum. You'll find it starting to move in the direction you told it to move! It will even come to a stop when you tell it to "Stop!"

Keep practicing until the pendulum moves at your every direction. Once you are comfortable knowing the pendulum will obey your commands, try the following demonstrations of its mysterious powers.

Demonstration 1
Draw a circle about 9 inches wide on a piece of paper. Pretend it's a compass but label the North-South line as "YES" and the East-West axis as "NO." Now, holding your pendulum directly over the center point, ask your pendulum a question which can be answered either Yes or No. Remember, it's very important that you do not try to sway the pendulum by moving your hand. Just watch its movements. See what the pendulum says! Pretty spooky!

Demonstration 2
See if you can tell whether someone is a girl or a boy, without actually seeing them. Legend has it that pendulums swing back and forth over a boy and in circles over a girl. Does it work for you?

Demonstration 3
Think of a number between 5 and 10. Hold your pendulum so that, without touching the sides or bottom, the bob hangs down inside a drinking glass . Concentrating on your number, the pendulum will start to swing until it hits the side of the glass. Mysteriously, it will continue to swing until it strikes exactly the number of times you were thinking of, then it will slowly stop.

Demonstration 4
Ask a friend to hide an object under a cloth or under one of several cups placed on your table. See if you can find the hidden object using your pendulum's movements to guide you to it.

Some say there is nothing "magical" about the pendulum in any of these demonstrations. They'll say the pendulum moves because you are moving it, which might be technically correct. But, the truly interesting question is whether your unconscious movements are being produced by extrasensory powers that have been unlocked by its magic.

What do you think?
